Melt Like That

Melt Like That

Every Valentine’s Day I am reminded of the story that prompted this song. It was in 2009 and the movie ‘He’s Just Not That into You’ was just released in theaters. The movie is a romantic comedy that navigates around relationships. I loved going to matinees by myself in the middle of the afternoon. So, I decided to go see this movie in said fashion.

It was a Saturday afternoon. I walked into the darkened theatre looking for a seat that wasn’t obstructed with big haired ladies with oversized drinks. I always had to have the perfect seat, for my perfect little solo event. It was this whole thing, not just a movie.
It was dark, but I could see well enough in front of me, the seat that would forever be remembered. The movie began, lighting up the room so you could see others, and about halfway through I look around me to see who else was in the theatre watching this movie.
One. One other person. Just one, and me. I looked down at my watch, which also told me the date, and it was February 14th. Valentine’s Day.

I was alone in a dark theatre room with ONE other stranger watching ‘He’s Just Not That into You’ on Valentine’s Day. Yes, I felt sorry for that other person, ‘what a loser’. As I sunk down in my seat a little, I did not want to be seen. However, being the only other one in the room, I could hardly be invisible. My preferred state of being at this instance.

I laughed it off of course. Not sure how it affected the other one in the theater, but I was good.

I love movies. I love being ‘in them’ as one of the actresses. I love ‘feeling’ the falling. The falling in love that romance movies are made of! I too, wanted to feel that way, in real life, in real love, with a real person! As I watched the movie characters realize they were in love, I thought, I want to melt like that.

Then the movie ended, the lights came back on, and with my head down I rushed out of that theatre like it was on fire! I hope no ‘one’ saw me.
